Composition and Properties of Drilling Barite<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Barite generally exists in white or light grey; however, it can also be found in blue, brown and black colors. This mineral is chemically neutral and insoluble in water. It has low Mohs hardness, reportedly between 2.5 and 3.5. Barite is a nonmetallic mineral and has a specific gravity of higher than 4. The most significant characteristic of barite is its high density (specific gravity).     The Primary use of barite throughout the world is in the oil and gas well drilling industry. Due to its high specific gravity, this mineral is used to increase the weight of the drilling fluid. Its other properties, including neutrality (non-corrosion), low hardness, softness, easy usage, neatness and suitable price, make it a common weighting agent in drilling fluids for this industry. To prevent any damages to drilling tools and equipment, this mineral should have specific gravity of over 4.1 and very fine granulation.
