Composition and Properties of Red Iron Oxide

Red iron oxide generally exists in two categories, synthetic (laboratorial) and natural. Synthetic red iron oxide powder has higher purity, as it is produced in lab conditions. The natural red ochre powder, excavated from natural mines and subsequently processed, is more economical. It is also devoid of any toxic and chemical substances that can be environmentally harmful.

The higher the level of iron oxide in red ochre, the higher its quality. Hormuz Red Ochre, mainly found in Hormuz Island in Iran, has an iron level of 65 to 70 percent and has one of highest qualities among this natural pigment. Other elements that ensure a high quality of red iron oxide are granulation and the smallness, as well as brightness and coating capacity of this mineral.

In general, red ochre powder is highly resistant towards changes in color in face of environmental conditions. As a result, it has vast applications in producing variety of paints and rust proof paint.

Uses of Red Iron Oxide

Considering its many applied properties, red ochre is useful in various industries. This invaluable mineral has been used since ancient times. Study of monuments and artifacts dating back to thousands of years reveals the existence of this mineral in a wide range of colors in ancient stones, walls and paintings.
